Salem, Massachusetts, was in the summer of 1914 a city whose economy still rested on its old seafaring past and its newer leather, shoe, and manufacturing trades. On June 25, 1914, a fire broke out in the crowded downtown, and wind carried it through a district of closely built wooden structures, consuming a large part of the business and commercial core. The disaster drew firefighters from neighboring communities and left many residents and merchants without shops, offices, or homes. Rebuilding followed over the next several years, and Salem residents of the day would have remembered the 1914 blaze as one of the most destructive events in the city's recent memory, alongside its better-known reputation for the 1692 witch trials.
