Boston in 1914 was a crowded port city of roughly 700,000 people, with its economy built on shoe and leather factories, textile mills, and the harbor. Fenway Park, which opened in 1912 in the Back Bay Fens neighborhood, was then one of the newer and larger ballparks in the country, and it was home to the Red Sox. That October the Boston Braves beat the Philadelphia Athletics in four straight games to win the World Series, a result that stunned many observers and gave the city a rare championship moment. Crowds in the streetcar-served neighborhoods around the park would have treated the series as a civic event, with fans filling the stands and the surrounding streets. The panorama captures a ballpark that residents already regarded as a local landmark.
