Fenway Park in Boston, Massachusetts, in 1914 was barely two years old, having opened in April 1912 as the home of the Boston Red Sox. The ballpark sat in the Fenway district beside the Back Bay Fens, reached by Boston's streetcar lines, which carried crowds from neighborhoods where many families worked in the city's shoe factories, textile mills, and docks. The Red Sox had just won the 1912 World Series, and the team drew fans from every class of the city. That summer a young left-handed pitcher named George Herman Ruth joined the club, and in the years ahead he would make Fenway one of the most famous ballparks in the country.
