In 1909 South Side Park, at 39th Street and Wentworth Avenue on Chicago's South Side, was home to the White Sox, and a game between the city's two major league clubs drew fans from across a city of about 2 million people. Chicago's economy rested on the railroads, the grain and lumber trade, and the Union Stock Yards just to the south, where thousands of workers in the meatpacking plants made the neighborhood one of the city's busiest working districts. Baseball had become a point of civic pride, and the rivalry between the North Side Cubs and the South Side White Sox split the city along neighborhood lines. The same year, the Chicago Plan Commission released Daniel Burnham's plan for the city's parks, boulevards, and lakefront, a reminder that residents were debating how their growing city should look. Fans who filled the grandstands would have known the park as a fixture of their own neighborhood.
