In October 1906 Chicago hosted the first all-city World Series, pitting its two clubs, the National League Cubs and the American League White Sox, against each other. The Cubs had won a record 116 games that season and were heavy favorites, so the White Sox's four-games-to-two victory stunned the city and drew huge celebrations on the South Side. Their offense had one of the weakest batting averages in the league, which earned the team the nickname "Hitless Wonders." Games alternated between the Cubs' West Side Park and the White Sox's South Side Park, and crowds came from a city of about 1.7 million that was then a major rail and stockyard center.
