Chicago in 1908 was a city of about two million people, a rail hub and meatpacking center whose stockyards and freight yards drew workers from across Europe and the rural Midwest. The Cubs played at West Side Park on the west side, and their games against the New York Giants that season carried real pennant stakes. In late September the two clubs met in the game remembered for Fred Merkle's failure to touch second base, which left the race unsettled until the Cubs won a replay and went on to take the World Series that fall. Fans filling the grandstands and bleachers would have seen the park as the heart of a neighborhood-based city that followed its team closely.
