Chicago's Cubs and the New York Giants met in 1908, a year when the Cubs were the city's dominant baseball club and their West Side ballpark drew crowds from neighborhoods across a city that was still growing fast on the strength of its railroads, stockyards, and factories. That season the Cubs won the National League pennant and then the World Series, and the rivalry with New York was among the sharpest in the league. Chicago was then a city of heavy industry and immigrant neighborhoods, and a ballgame was one of the few public gatherings where workers from the packing houses and the mills could sit side by side with merchants and clerks. Baseball in 1908 was cheap to attend and talked about everywhere, from streetcars to saloons, so the game in this photograph would have been familiar to nearly everyone who lived in the city.
