Chicago in 1908 was a city of roughly two million people, built on railroads, the Union Stock Yards, and grain and lumber shipping along the Chicago River and Lake Michigan. This ballooning contest at Aero Park reflected how quickly flight had captured public imagination, only five years after the Wright brothers' first powered flight in 1903. Crowds gathered to watch the great gas bags lift off and drift across the sky, much as they turned out for a ball game or a county fair. For ordinary residents of the city's factory districts, aviation was still a novelty, but it hinted at a future that reached well beyond the rail yards and the smoke of the packing houses.
