National League Park, the West Side grounds where the Chicago Cubs played in 1904, stood near Wood and Polk streets, in a neighborhood of workers' cottages, factories, and rail lines. Chicago that year was one of the country's great rail and industrial centers, with its stockyards and meatpacking plants drawing immigrant laborers from across Europe, and the city had passed 1.7 million residents at the 1900 census. Ballgames drew crowds of men who rode streetcars west after their shifts, and the park was a common Saturday destination for families and neighborhood clubs. Chicagoans were still grieving the Iroquois theater fire of December 1903, which killed hundreds, and the city's civic life was marked by debates over streetcar franchises and public health. The park was a familiar landmark to residents on the West Side.
