Chicago in 1904 was the rail and meatpacking center of the Midwest, with its stockyards and freight yards drawing workers and immigrants from across Europe. The city had grown to nearly 1.7 million people by the 1900 census, and its streetcar lines carried fans and workers to ball grounds on the South Side. Baseball was a major source of civic pride, and a contest between a Boston club and a Chicago club on August 14, 1904, would have brought a large crowd, the kind of gathering that made a ballpark a public event as much as a sporting one. The summer also saw national attention on the St. Louis World's Fair, and Chicago residents followed the baseball pennant races in the newspapers each day.
