Chicago in 1905 was a city of roughly two million people, less than forty years removed from the 1871 fire that destroyed much of its business district. Meatpacking at the Union Stock Yards, grain elevators, and a dense web of railroad lines made it the commercial center of the Midwest, and its wholesale and retail houses drew shoppers from across the region. Marshall Field & Company, whose State Street store was among the largest in the country, stood as a symbol of that commercial strength. Along Michigan Avenue, the lakefront street ran beside the rail yards and the open waterfront, where residents of the South and North Sides went for leisure and crowds gathered for public events.
