Chicago in 1907 was a city of about two million people, built on meatpacking, rail freight, and steel and manufacturing along its river and lake shore. Baseball was one of its great civic pastimes, and two major league clubs drew crowds from every neighborhood. The National League Cubs had a strong team that season, winning the pennant under manager Frank Chance and playing at West Side Park, while the American League White Sox played on the South Side. Fans rode the streetcars and elevated lines to games, and a team photograph like this one was a point of local pride, since the club's record was a subject of talk in saloons, offices, and stockyard boarding houses alike.
