In October 1907, Chicago was host to the World Series between its National League club, the Cubs, and the American League champion Detroit Tigers, whose star Ty Cobb was already the league's most feared hitter. The Cubs played at West Side Park, and the series drew large crowds from a city that was then one of the country's great rail and stockyard centers. Fans came from the packinghouses and the downtown offices alike, so the games showed how baseball could draw workers and businessmen into the same grandstands. Chicago won the series four games to none, with one game ending in a tie. The result gave the city a rare moment of championship pride in a year of rapid growth.
