Chicago, Illinois, hosted the 1906 World Series, the only one played between two teams from the same city: the Cubs from the West Side and the White Sox from the South Side. The Cubs had won 116 regular-season games and were heavy favorites, but the White Sox, nicknamed the "Hitless Wonders" for their weak batting, won the Series four games to two. Chicago was then a major rail and meatpacking center with more than a million and a half residents, and a crowd like the one shown here would have drawn workers from packinghouses, factories, and offices across the city. For Chicagoans, baseball was the most popular public entertainment of the day, and this Series let the city's two rival fan bases argue over the championship without leaving home.
