West Side Park, at Polk and Wood streets, was the Cubs' home grounds in 1909, a team that had won both the National League pennant and the World Series the previous autumn. Chicago around it was one of the largest cities in the country, with about two million people, and its economy rested on the stockyards, meatpacking houses, steel works, and rail lines that converged there. Crowds from immigrant neighborhoods rode streetcars west to such games, and the rivalry with the American League White Sox, who played on the South Side, kept the city arguing in newspapers and saloons. That same year the Commercial Club published the Plan of Chicago, a proposal for lakefront parks and boulevards in a city that was growing fast.
