Decatur, Illinois, in 1909 was a manufacturing and railroad city of the Sangamon River valley, with its economy built on corn processing, farm implements, and freight moving over its rail lines. The A.E. Staley starch works had become one of the town's major employers, and the city's business leaders were the families most likely to belong to a private club of this kind. A country club in those years offered a place away from downtown for golf, dining, and summer social events, and it signaled a prosperous middle class at ease with leisure time. Decatur residents of the period would have known the city as a busy Macon County seat whose fortunes rose and fell with the grain trade and the factories along its tracks.
