Augusta, Georgia, in 1909 was a Savannah River town whose economy rested on cotton, with river trade and textile mills such as the Sibley Mill on the canal employing many local families. Its reputation as a winter resort was growing, as visitors from northern cities came south to stay at hotels like the Bon Air and to play golf in the mild climate. The Augusta Country Club, recorded here in a wide view of its grounds, belonged to that social world of clubs, carriage drives and hotel verandas. Life in the town was also shaped by the segregation and Jim Crow customs that separated Black and white residents, a divide that determined who could belong to such clubs at all.
