Atlanta in 1909 was the railroad hub of the Southeast, with lines radiating outward carrying cotton, lumber, and livestock into and out of the city. The Union Stock Yards sat among those tracks, where cattle, hogs, and sheep arrived by train to be penned, sold, and shipped on to slaughterhouses and packing plants. Atlanta's population was growing quickly, and the city was reaching toward the 150,000 mark that the 1910 census would record. Only three years earlier the city had suffered a deadly race riot in September 1906, and in 1909 its commerce was still rebuilding public confidence after that violence. For the drovers, railroad men, and commission merchants who worked there, the yards were a daily fact of city life, and the rail traffic they generated tied Atlanta to markets across the region.
