Richmond, Virginia, in 1909 was the state capital and a city whose fortunes rested on railroads, tobacco, and iron. Its stock yards handled cattle, hogs, and sheep that arrived by rail from the Piedmont and the Valley, where they were held, sold, and shipped on toward eastern markets. Several lines converged on the city, and the yards depended on their cars and sidings to keep livestock moving. Tobacco factories and flour mills along the river supplied much of the payroll, while the Tredegar iron works recalled the Confederate capital's wartime production. Residents knew Richmond as a Southern commercial center still recovering from the destruction of 1865, and it was growing toward a population of more than 100,000 by 1910.
