Parkersburg, West Virginia, in 1909 was an Ohio River city whose fortunes rested on railroads, river freight, and the oil and gas developments that drew investment into the Mid-Ohio Valley after the Civil War. The Baltimore and Ohio's tracks ran near the riverfront, carrying coal, glass, and petroleum products to eastern and western markets, and local factories supplied goods for that trade. Streets and bridges carried horse teams and foot traffic, and residents knew the town as a commercial center for the surrounding counties. Churches, schools, and fraternal lodges anchored civic life, while the river remained the town's oldest artery.
