Parkersburg, West Virginia, sat at the confluence of the Ohio and Little Kanawha rivers in 1909, and it served as the county seat of Wood County. The Baltimore and Ohio Railroad had reached the town in the 1850s, so freight and passengers moved along both the rails and the river. Steamboats and barges still carried goods up and down the Ohio, and the waterfront was the town's commercial spine. Oil and natural gas drilling in the surrounding Ohio Valley counties brought money and workers to the region in these years. The riverfront shown here would have been the place where residents met incoming boats and loaded cargo, and where the town's commerce was most visible.
