Terra Alta, a small railroad town in the highlands of Preston County, West Virginia, was home to the state's tuberculosis sanitarium in 1918, when tuberculosis remained one of the country's leading causes of death. The local economy rested on timber, surrounding farms, and the railroad, which carried lumber and coal out of the mountains and brought in patients and supplies. Doctors of the period prescribed rest, fresh air, and good food, and the town's elevation was considered well suited to those treatments, so the institution drew sufferers from across the state. That autumn also brought the influenza pandemic and the wartime demands of World War I, which strained hospitals and a community of modest size. For the patients and staff pictured here, Terra Alta was known mainly as a place to recover from a feared illness.
