In 1917, the Navy built a projectile factory on the Kanawha River near Charleston, West Virginia, as the United States prepared for and entered the First World War that April. The Kanawha Valley was already known for coal, salt brine and chemical works, and the river carried coal and manufactured goods toward the Ohio. The plant brought wartime construction crews, new jobs and rising rents to a valley that had long depended on mining and river trade. Residents of Charleston, the state capital, would have seen the site as a sign that federal war production had reached the Appalachian interior. The picture records the works in its early years, when the buildings were new and the surrounding ground was still being cleared and graded.
