Lewisburg, the seat of Greenbrier County in southeastern West Virginia, was a small county town in 1913, built along the Greenbrier River and served by the Chesapeake and Ohio Railway's line through the valley. Farming, livestock, and timber were the main sources of local income, and the town's trade flowed through its courthouse square and the railway depot. The Presbyterian seminary on the hill was among its best-known institutions, drawing students from across the region and giving Lewisburg a reputation as a center of church and schooling. This photograph shows the school's grounds and buildings as local residents of the period would have recognized them.
