Lewisburg, the county seat of Greenbrier County in southeastern West Virginia, looked out in 1913 over a town that had grown up around courthouse business, farming, and trade with the surrounding valley. Its economy rested mostly on livestock, grain, and dairy farms in the Greenbrier Valley, with merchants, lawyers, and professional families handling the affairs of the county. The town also drew visitors and students, and its schools and churches gave it a steady civic life. Nearby, the resort at White Sulphur Springs brought wealthy travelers through the region, so Lewisburg residents would have known their town as a quiet market center close to a much grander summer world.
