Lewisburg, the seat of Greenbrier County in southeastern West Virginia, was a small farm town in 1913, set on the Greenbrier River in a valley known for livestock, grain, and orchards. Its streets still carried the memory of the Civil War, when the town changed hands several times and a Union force won a battle there in 1862. The military academy pictured here drew cadets from across the state and beyond, and it gave the town a steady population of students, instructors, and the families who served them. Most residents still depended on the land and on the county courthouse trade, and the town's social life centered on churches, fraternal lodges, and school events. In a period when rail travel was reshaping much of Appalachia, Lewisburg remained a place known more for its schools and its farms than for industry.
