Lewisburg, the seat of Greenbrier County in southeastern West Virginia, was a small county town in 1913, set among farms and limestone hills along the Greenbrier River. Its economy rested on agriculture, livestock, and the trade that moved through its courthouse square and local stores, while the region's larger industries of timber, coal, and iron were concentrated farther west and in the mountain counties. The Chesapeake and Ohio Railway line, which reached the area in the years before, tied the town to markets beyond the valley and helped bring new visitors to the nearby resort hotels. Residents of that day would have known Lewisburg chiefly as a quiet county seat with churches, schools, and a reputation for its historic buildings, a place where town and countryside were closely bound together.
