Morgantown, West Virginia, in 1913 was a small river town built on the Monongahela, where the state's young university, then known as West Virginia University, sat on the hill above the downtown streets. The region's economy ran on coal: mines in the surrounding hills and river traffic carried coal and timber, and the town's growth tracked those industries and the railroads that served them. The university had been founded in 1867 as a land-grant school and was still modest in size, with its campus buildings clustered on high ground overlooking the river valley. Residents of the period knew Morgantown as a college town as much as an industrial one, and the campus shaped its social life, from student organizations to football games that drew local crowds.
