West Liberty Normal School sat in the small town of West Liberty in Ohio County, in the northern panhandle of West Virginia, in 1914. By then the school had spent decades training teachers for a state where many rural districts still depended on one-room schoolhouses and teachers with little formal preparation. Most of its students came from farm families and small towns in the surrounding hills, and many went back to teach in the same counties they had left. The wider region ran on farming, dairying, and the industries of the Ohio River valley, with Wheeling, a short drive away, serving as the nearest center of mills, factories, and rail traffic. In the photograph, the campus buildings and grounds would have been the place where that cycle of training and return played out each school year.
