Huntington, West Virginia, in 1910 was a young river city on the Ohio, shaped by the railroad and the riverboat trade that had made it a freight and shipping point since the 1870s. The Chesapeake and Ohio Railway had its shops and terminal interests there, and the city drew workers into its rail yards, foundries, tanneries, and wholesale houses that served the surrounding counties of the Tri-State area. Huntington had grown quickly over the previous few decades, and its streets and church spires would have been familiar to residents as signs of a town still expanding toward the hills. Civic life centered on downtown merchants, fraternal lodges, and the river landings, where steamboats and barges carried coal, timber, and manufactured goods up and down the Ohio.
