In 1915 Harpers Ferry still ran largely on the Baltimore and Ohio, whose freight yards and passenger trains moved coal, lumber, and workers through the narrow streets where the Potomac meets the Shenandoah. Across the river, the Chesapeake and Ohio Canal still carried barges along its towpath, though rail had already taken much of the hauling. Residents followed the war in Europe through newspapers from Baltimore and Washington, while automobiles were beginning to appear on the roads leading out toward Charles Town. Visitors and townspeople alike knew the place as a crossroads of rail, river, and the old memories of the 1850s and 1860s.
