Roanoke, Virginia, was the headquarters city of the Norfolk and Western Railway, and its yards in 1915 handled the coal that the line hauled from the mountains of southwestern Virginia and West Virginia toward tidewater ports. The town had grown from a small crossroads called Big Lick into a railroad city, and the company's shops and offices supplied a large share of its jobs. The United States had not yet entered the war in Europe, but American railroads and factories were already running hard on wartime orders, and heavy freight kept the tracks crowded. For residents, the daily rhythm of the city was set by whistles, switching engines, and shift changes at the yards. Tracks, freight cars, and rail buildings filled the ground, showing how much of local life depended on the line.
