White River Junction, Vermont, in 1915 was a railroad town at the meeting point of the Central Vermont and Boston and Maine lines, where the White and Connecticut rivers also came together. Its economy leaned heavily on rail traffic, with engine shops, freight yards, and passenger connections drawing workers and travelers through the village. The Connecticut River was a working waterway for lumber and goods, and nearby mills and foundries added to the local payroll. Residents of Windsor County would have known the junction as the gateway where trains changed direction and where the town's fortunes rose and fell with the railroads. The panorama captures that busy rail-centered community on the eve of wider changes brought by the First World War.
