Providence, Rhode Island, in 1915 was an industrial city of well over 200,000 people, known across the country for its jewelry and silverware factories, its textile and machine shops, and its harbor on Narragansett Bay. The city's civic center, anchored by City Hall, stood close to the passenger rail station, which made the downtown a place where mill workers, shopkeepers, and commuters crossed paths daily. Trains carried goods and passengers to Boston, New York, and beyond, so the station was as much a part of local identity as the factories that shipped through it. Residents of the day would have recognized the view as the heart of a busy manufacturing town that depended on rail for its commerce.
