Newport, Rhode Island, in 1902 was in the middle of its years as the Gilded Age's favorite summer retreat, a harbor town that had once lived on whaling and shipping but now drew wealthy families from New York and Philadelphia each season. The Newport Casino, a shingled club set on lawns along Bellevue Avenue, was the social center of that summer world, with its tennis courts and clubhouse verandas. The grounds also hosted the national lawn tennis championships, which had been played there since 1881, so sporting crowds mixed with cottage owners and their guests. Few residents would have thought of the place as anything but the summer capital of fashionable American society.
