Newport, Rhode Island, in 1902 was the leading summer resort on the Atlantic coast, where wealthy families from New York and Philadelphia kept large cottages along Bellevue Avenue and spent the season on yachting, lawn tennis, and garden parties. The Newport Casino grounds were the center of that social calendar, and cricket was one of the older English-style games still played there by local clubs. Matches against visiting teams drew well-dressed spectators who watched from the grass or from benches under awnings. Beyond the summer colony, the city still depended on its harbor and the Naval Training Station, which employed sailors and civilian workers. Year-round residents held the trades and service jobs that kept the seasonal visitors comfortable.
