Philadelphia in 1908 was one of the largest industrial cities in the United States, with more than a million and a half residents, and its factories, including the Baldwin Locomotive Works and the Cramp shipyard, turned out goods that shipped across the country. That year the annual Army-Navy football game was held in Philadelphia, where the rivalry between the United States Military Academy at West Point and the Naval Academy at Annapolis drew cadets, midshipmen, alumni, and local crowds to the University of Pennsylvania's Franklin Field. For many Philadelphians the game was a major autumn event, bringing visiting officers, families, and fans into the city's streetcar lines, hotels, and restaurants. The photograph captures a sporting occasion that was also a civic and social gathering, one that linked a growing industrial city to the service academies and to the national pride that surrounded them.
