Exposition Park, on Pittsburgh's North Side, was the home ballpark of the Pirates in 1904, when this August afternoon was recorded. Pittsburgh was one of the country's great iron and steel centers, with mills along the Monongahela and Allegheny rivers that filled the sky with smoke and drew workers from across Europe and the hills of western Pennsylvania. The city had grown quickly over the previous decades and sat at a busy rail junction, so many spectators came by streetcar or by train from nearby towns. Honus Wagner was the team's standout shortstop that year, and the park had already hosted games in the 1903 World Series, the first modern championship between the National and American leagues. For mill hands and clerks alike, a ballgame offered a few hours away from the shifts that ran day and night.
