In 1905, Pittsburgh was one of the great industrial cities of the United States, with more than 300,000 residents by 1900 and a skyline shaped by steel mills, rail yards, and the smoke of the Allegheny and Monongahela valleys. Carnegie Steel and its rivals employed large numbers of immigrant workers, and the city's wealth funded churches, schools, and a growing taste for organized athletics. College football was gaining crowds across the country that autumn, and contests between Pittsburgh teams and eastern opponents drew loyal fans who traveled by rail and streetcar to the grounds. The picture records a sporting event held in this setting, when a working city's pride often found its outlet on the playing field.
