Pittsburg, Pennsylvania, opened its 1905 baseball season with a home game against Cincinnati, at a time when the city was known above all for iron and steel. Mills along the Monongahela and Allegheny rivers ran around the clock, and their smoke hung so heavily over the valley that afternoons could grow dim. Honus Wagner, the shortstop who won the National League batting title that year, was the team's best-known player, and the Pirates played at Exposition Park on the North Side. Crowds of mill and railroad workers filled the grandstand and bleachers, making the opener one of the season's biggest local occasions.
