In 1905 the Susquehanna River crossings of south-central Pennsylvania carried heavy traffic, since railroads, river commerce and the towns on both banks all depended on getting across the broad water. Harrisburg, the state capital, and the neighboring river towns handled rail freight, iron and lumber, and their residents crossed daily for work and trade. The Pennsylvania Railroad's main line ran over the river near Harrisburg, tying Philadelphia to Pittsburgh, so its bridges were among the most important structures in the valley. Local people knew these spans as a daily route for freight wagons, commuters and passenger trains, and as a point where spring floods could threaten the piers.
