The Horseshoe Curve near Altoona, Pennsylvania, in 1934 sat at the heart of the Pennsylvania Railroad's main line across the Allegheny Mountains. Altoona had grown up around the railroad after the company established its shops there in the 1850s, and by the Depression the city's economy still depended heavily on rail repair work and locomotive building in the big shops along the tracks. The curve, a sweeping bend cut into the mountainside west of town, let heavy freight and passenger trains climb the grade at a manageable pitch, and it was known across the country to railroad men and travelers alike. Many of the city's residents worked for the company, so the fortunes of the line and the town were closely tied.
