Pittsburgh sits at the meeting point of the Allegheny, Monongahela and Ohio rivers, and a panoramic view from 1906 captures that geography at a time when the city's steel mills, rail yards and river traffic were at their busiest. Panoramic city views like this one were popular in the early twentieth century, often produced by commercial firms who sold them to residents, businesses and civic boosters eager to show off growing industrial centers. Pittsburgh was then one of the country's leading producers of iron and steel, and its smoke-darkened skyline was a symbol of American industrial strength. Look closely at the riverfronts and bridges, which show how tightly the city was packed into its valleys.
