Huntingdon, the seat of Huntingdon County in central Pennsylvania, sat along the Juniata River in 1913, where the Raystown Branch joins the main stream in a valley of ridges and farmland. The Pennsylvania Railroad's main line ran through the town, and its trains hauling coal, iron, and freight over the Allegheny ranges made the railroad the largest employer and the center of everyday life. Local people knew the town for its rail shops and division point, for its courthouse square, and for Juniata College, a Brethren-founded school whose students were a familiar presence on the streets. A wide panoramic view of the town in this period shows a community defined by the tracks, the river, and the hills that funneled both into one place.
