Mount Washington rises above the south side of the Monongahela River, and from its overlook the whole confluence of the Allegheny, Monongahela and Ohio rivers spreads out below, the city's steel mills and rail yards strung along the water. A 1920 view from this height captures Pittsburgh at the peak of its industrial growth, when the smoke of its furnaces was a sign of prosperity and the three rivers were among the busiest commercial waterways in the country.
