Pittsburgh in 1909 was a steel and rail city, with mills along the Monongahela and Allegheny rivers running day and night, and its population had passed half a million by the 1910 census. That fall the Pirates won the National League pennant under manager Fred Clarke, with shortstop Honus Wagner as the team's best-known player. The club had opened Forbes Field in Oakland that summer, and fans from the mill neighborhoods followed the team closely, giving working families a shared civic pride that cut across ethnic lines. The champions went on to defeat the Detroit Tigers in the 1909 World Series, which Pittsburgh took in seven games.
