This photograph shows a University of Pittsburgh football game against Washington & Jefferson College, played at Forbes Field in 1915. Forbes Field had opened in 1909 in the Oakland neighborhood as the home of the Pittsburgh Pirates, and the university's football teams also used it for major home games during that era. The 1915 season was Pop Warner's first as Pitt's head coach, a period when college football was growing into a large public spectacle. Images like this one document how big crowds filled the stadium's stands for such contests.
