Nicholson, a small borough in Wyoming County, sat in the Tunkhannock Creek valley of northeastern Pennsylvania in 1915, when the Delaware, Lackawanna and Western Railroad was finishing the Nicholson Viaduct to carry its main line across the deep gorge. The concrete arch structure, more than 2,000 feet long, replaced a route that had slowed trains on the steep grades. The Lackawanna was built to haul anthracite coal from the Scranton and Wilkes-Barre fields to eastern markets, so the viaduct was part of a larger effort to keep those heavy coal trains moving. Local residents in the area knew the railroad as the main employer and the most important link to the outside world, and the new bridge quickly became a landmark of the valley.
