Shibe Park in Philadelphia, shown here during the 1910 World Series, was then only a year old, having opened in 1909 as the home of Connie Mack's Athletics. The Athletics had built a strong club around stars such as second baseman Eddie Collins and third baseman Frank "Home Run" Baker, and they faced the Chicago Cubs in the Series that fall. Philadelphia was a major industrial city, with locomotive works, textile mills, and shipyards employing large numbers of workers, and a day at the ballpark drew fans from many of its neighborhoods. Baseball in the city was a source of civic pride, and a World Series game was one of the largest public gatherings the city could host.
