In October 1909, Detroit hosted part of the World Series at Bennett Park, the Tigers' wooden ballpark near Michigan and Trumbull avenues on the city's west side. The Pittsburgh Pirates faced the Tigers, and the matchup drew fans from across Michigan who had followed Ty Cobb's batting race and the Tigers' pennant. Detroit was then a fast-growing manufacturing city, where automobile makers, stove and tool shops, and rail yards drew workers and their families, and a World Series crowd filled the park with many of them. The series ended with Pittsburgh winning in seven games, and Honus Wagner's Pirates became the champions that fall. For Detroiters, the crowd at Bennett Park marked a proud moment in a city whose fortunes were rising with industry.
